Our monthlong exhibit and the prior day's event at Berkeley Central Library, Forever Falastin, was a celebration and recovery of Palestinian culture:
Many in the audience were brought to tears as they connected to the memory of @halaby_mona’s mother, uncle, and the Palestinian people through archival photographs and stories passed down from her family. Mona is an educator, social historian, and the author of In My Mother’s Footsteps: A Palestinian Refugee Returns Home.
We got to see up close the stunning collective tapestry “Wall of Tears,” conceived by Jean Pierre Larochette and Yael Lurie, and woven with 7 weavers. Their text(ile) was woven with motifs of hands, barbed wire, walls, water, and birds of transcendence. They dedicated this project to Gazans, immigrants of what is now called the US, and all indigenous peoples.
Bay dabke reveres and paid its respects to Palestinian dabke. We were so grateful for the joyful dancing led by a member of the Queer SWANA-led @dabkedragdrums.
Participants of all ages created mosaic art with the themes of a free Palestine. We were honored to have El Cerrito artist Sylvia Mori provide us with glass & do a demo. This activity was inspired by the long history of Palestinian mosaic art, many of which have been expropriated or destroyed by Israel. This includes the Al-Bureij Mosaic (5th-7th century), discovered in 2022 in perfect condition and since damaged in the ongoing genocide.
